As the anthropologist Jennifer Robertson claims, Japanese conservative discourses on technology tend to present digitalization not primarily as something that pertains to Japan's future but, surprisingly, to its past. One example of this 'retro-tech' is the fact that social robots are gendered in a way that aligns with traditional gender roles. We will take a closer look at this phenomenon by investigating various source materials, such as party platforms and PR videos.
