This seminar aims at providing students with essential and comprehensive knowledge on the contemporary Japanese society and its social challenges. The topics covered are:
- Intellectual history of Japanese studies
- Disparity society
- Meritocratic society
- Information society
- Neoliberalism in labour market
- Neoliberalism in political economy
- Depopulation and aging soicety
- Civil society
- the rise of right-wing populism
Each session will combine a short lecture on the social challenges and discussions among students.
All the listed readings are mandatory and available online.
