Since the Meiji restoration, the role and power of the Japanese prime minister have seen profound changes as the nation went from absolutist monarchy to fascism and finally to democracy. In the postwar order, the role of the prime minister has varied as well depending on changes in the political system and socioeconomic, technological, and cultural developments. In this seminar, we will investigate political leadership in Japan from the perspective of political history and social sciences. As transformational change in Japan has often emerged from the periphery, we will also investigate the geographical origin of leaders. For visualization of our results, we will use the digital ClioVis timeline tool and create digital maps on the ArcGis StoryMaps platform.
